SUMMARY:CWSG April 2026 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The History of Rug Hooking in Missouri \nWe will welcome Mary Barile\, a expert and historian on rug hooking \n6:00 Social and Library Time \n6:30 Business meeting  Zoom available for Business meeting only. Guest speaker is in person this evening we can attempt to Zoom the guest speaker following the business meeting. \n7:00 \nThe History of Rug Hooking in Missouri \nFrom Mary’s Linked In:  I am first and foremost\, an historian (PhD\, theatre history\, University of Missouri)\, with interests in the arts and popular culture\, and have written articles and books about American hauntings\, theatre\, and music. I have received a Missouri Humanities Council award for public service. But my real passion is the traditional arts and folk art\, in particular\, American hooked rugs. I have been a rug hooker for most of my life\, and am an expert dyer and designer\, with a focus on reproducing antique designs for modern hooking artists. I am the author of the first book about rug hooking in the American Midwest\, and have organized major rug hooking exhibits\, including at the Missouri State Capitol\, in honor of the state’s 2021 bicentennial. I work with galleries and historic societies to promote and recognize rug hooking for its importance as a folk art and to outreach to artists and craftspeople who are interested in learning the skill. In 2018\, I founded a Missouri guild with the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists\, and had the governor of Missouri recognize May 2020 as the state rug hooking month. I served on the ATHA Biennial board\, for the 2022 biennial in Kansas City\, KS. I have made presentations about rug hooking to community and state groups\, and seek out new ways to communicate the story of rug hooking to the public. I would like to see more academic work being done in the area of rug hooking and popular culture. I was recently selected for the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program (Missouri Folks Arts)\, as a master teacher in the field of rug hooking. \nAll meetings are open to the public.  Bring a guest to share the fun. \nCWSG is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83743606024?pwd=iqN7h6O2moHz4Mshw00Ci2L6zlth2W.1 \nMeeting ID: 837 4360 6024\nPasscode: 893088 \n— \nOne tap mobile\n+13092053325\,\,83743606024#\,\,\,\,*893088# US\n+13126266799\,\,83743606024#\,\,\,\,*893088# US (Chicago) \nJoin instructions\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meetings/83743606024/invitations?signature=ZBoDKtRfB5NDup3gh_9HmYg–QGTHuyISgeqWsm6HV4
