Youth Fiber Art Exhibition

The Youth Fiber Art Exhibition is a fun and creative program designed to encourage the instruction of fiber art skills to area children. Students create a fiber art project as part of their regular art classes or club. Art projects will be picked up by a guild member to be displayed at the Columbia Art League, 207 S. 9th Street. Prizes will be awarded to students in each school. All participating students, parents, and teachers are invited to a reception at a TBD date.

Timeline of Events: Yet to be determined for 2025

Intent to Participate: Date to be determined, email name of School, Teacher’s name and number of students participating.

List of Participants: Date to be determined; Entries include students name, grade, medium. (See name tag below) and permission slips. These can be emailed, or permission slips may be sent with the student’s art piece.

Entries will be picked up by CWSG member: Date to be determined Please have artwork tagged with student’s name, boxed and ready to be picked up by 9:00 am in the school office.

Opening Reception/Awards Ceremony: TBA

Exhibition Closes: TBA Teachers may pick up student’s artwork beginning at 4:00. Artwork not picked up will be returned to schools the week of May 8 – 12th.

A Few Notes:

  • Elementary, Middle, and High Schools are all considered different schools, and all can participate.
  • If you anticipate more than 20 entries from your school, please contact us in advance so special arrangements can be made.
  • Any fiber art is acceptable. Projects can include – but are not limited to – weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting, embroidery, sewing, dye techniques, basket making, and paper making.
  • All students need a signed permission slip to participate. No project will be displayed without a permission slip.
  • Only projects made by an individual will be accepted. No group/team projects will be allowed.
  • Encourage your students to personalize their projects. This encourages creativity and makes it easier for our judges to compare projects.
  • The Columbia Weavers and Spinners’ Guild has several members who would be happy to help you teach a fiber art skill at your school. Please contact a member below for more information.

As soon as possible, please let us know if your school will be participating: February 28thPlease send us a typed list of those participating in the YFAE by Wednesday April 19, 2023. Include the following information, which will be displayed on their artwork.

  • Student Name (As they want it to appear by their art)
  • Grade in school
  • Title of piece (optional)
  • Medium used
  • General size/dimension of each piece (In Inches)
  • If it needs to be hung

Scanned copies of the permission slips are acceptable electronically – and encouraged! Please send all information to the email address below.  Each student must have completed all the work themselves.  Projects do not have to be a classroom project. All art must be made during the 2022-2023 school year.

Guidelines

  • Maximum size of 36” x 36” – no minimum size – and cannot protrude more than 6” from the wall.

  • Pieces may be matted for display, but this is not necessary.
  • Hanging pieces must be ready to hang with the appropriate hardware, loops, or pieces of background paper already attached.
  • Participant’s names MUST BE ATTACHED TO THEIR WORK but must be placed where judges will not see them. Once judging is over, the participant’s name will be made visible to the public by the CWSG. The tag below can be filled out and used.

CWSG will be judging the pieces and giving out several awards for the exhibition based on the following criteria. Works will be judged based on Craftsmanship, Creativity, Originality, Neatness, and Personal Expression.
